My name is Nuala Spainhower.
I have worked and volunteered with Move4Parkinsons for the last 2 years. Mags Mullarney (founder of M4P ) had shared with me that a couple of years after she was diagnosed with Parkinsons she decided to walk the Dublin Marathon ! I couldn’t believe it. I was so inspired. I have travelled and worked with Mags and I see her challenges dealing with Parkinsons close up. How on earth could she trust her body and mind to walk 26 miles.
As a Type 1 Diabetic for over 20 years, I do face my own challenges and some days I do better than others. So I thought if Mags can walk a Marathon – so can I. And now here I am, less than 7 days away from walking my first Dublin Marathon. I can’t believe it. On the days that I don’t feel like walking, or even getting out of bed because my sugars and insulin are out of sync, I think of Mags and all of my friends in Move4Parkinson’s. Their courage and determination encourages me to get on with it and stop feeling sorry for myself.
I’ve done the training (for the most part), I think I have the right gear, I’ve a fantastic support team and I’ll be wearing the T-Shirt and flying the flag for Move4Parkinson’s on the day. Now all I have to do is take this long walk (6 ½ hrs to be exact) one step at a time and enjoy the experience….Wish me luck and please support me on:
